Good Morning,

Proverbs 11 continues the contrast between righteousness and sin.  God is the promoter of righteousness, while Satan is the promoter and architect of sin and disobedience.

This morning I want us to look at Proverbs 11:12-13.  This devotion is short but very important!

vs. 12 "He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace."  As you know a neighbor can be a mighty asset, but only if you are careful to respect them.  To despise your neighbor is to disrespect your neighbor.  Are you going to be a bridge of help and harmony in your neighborhood or a source of contention and malice?  Those who live their lives despising others with contempt in their heart are void of wisdom.  The word translated wisdom is a common Hebrew word for "heart".  Most people live their lives without regard for others, but they have an inordinate amount of focus on themselves.  The text certainly implies this fool is mouthy.  By contrast, a man of understanding holds his peace.  

vs. 13 "A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter."  In a similar manner, a talebearer is a gossip who chooses not to keep his (or her) mouth shut.  It takes discipline to know when to speak and when to remain silent.  A person who values relationships will guard the relationship by keeping their mouth closed.  Fools tell it all, while the wise person is discreet.  Be careful what you say, and to whom you say it.  You will be glad you practiced such discipline. A stern warning is found in Proverbs 17:9, "He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends."  I want to be surrounded by a strong, loving, trusting community.  Therefore, it is important you treat your neighbor with respect, and you learn to discipline your mouth.
