The Wisdom of Learning & Obedience

Proverbs 6:20, "My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:"

Proverbs 6:23, “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life."

I sense that society has a negative view of commandments, laws, and reproofs. We view them as being restrictive, inhibiting, and robbers of fun. Yet throughout the Proverbs we hear a repetitive theme to listen to the words of wisdom that are brought forth via our parents, and also the Word of God.

Do you possess a biblical view of God’s commandments, laws, and reproofs? Steve Currington, the founder of Reformers Unanimous, said, "When you step over a boundary, you are exchanging boundaries for bondage." Commandments, laws, and reproofs are the way by which we learn the right paths of life. We can choose the wrong path, but it will lead you to bondage. Freedom is found in learning, listening, and obeying. James speaks of the "perfect law of liberty" in James 1:25, "But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed." Do you not find it interesting that God speaks of His Word as "the perfect law of liberty."

  • Learn the truth: "the commandment is a lamp."

  • Learn the truth: "the law is light."

  • Learn the truth: "reproofs of instruction are the way of life."

Psalm 119:105, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Do not make the foolish mistake of exchanging commandments, laws, and reproofs for bondage.

Have a great day obeying the Word of God!

PONDER & MEDITATE

1. How would you describe your view of commandments, boundaries, and rules?

2. How should the phrase in James “perfect law of liberty” change your view of rules?

3. Have you developed enough in your Christian life to follow all of God’s commands?
