The Humiliation of the Man, Christ Jesus

Isaiah 50:6, "I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting."

We are quick to accept the deity of Jesus Christ, and rightly so, but how about the humanity of Christ.  The Roman governor, Pontius Pilate invited the Jews to behold the man, and today I invite you to join me as we behold the man.

1.  The Biblical Picture of the Man, Christ Jesus.

Behold the Man -  Born of a woman named Mary (Galatians 4:4).

  • Galatians 4:4, “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law,”

Behold the Man – Born a baby in a manager, who grew and developed from infancy to manhood (Luke 2:40,  52)

  • Luke 2:40, “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of  God was upon him.”

  • Luke 2:52, “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”

Behold the Man – Whose Ethnicity was evident – He was Recognized as a Jew (John 4:9).

  • John 4:9, “Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.”

Behold the Man – Who Experienced Fatigue (John 4:6)

  • John 4:6, “Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.”

Behold the Man – Who Experienced Hunger (Matthew 21:18).

  • Matthew 21:18, “Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.”

Behold the Man – Who Needed Sleep (Matthew 8:24).

  • Matthew 8:24, “And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

Behold the Man – Who Was Scourged by Pilate to Fulfill the Scriptures (John 19:1)

  • Isaiah 50:6, “I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.”

Behold the Man – Who Was Mocked by the Roman Soldiers (John 19:2-3)

  • Matthew 27:29, “And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon His head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked Him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!”

  • Placed a crown of thorns on His head (vs. 2)

  • Placed a purple robe upon Him (vs. 2)

  • They Blasphemed Him With their tongues (vs. 3)

  • They Smote Him With their hands (vs. 3)

Behold the Man – Condemned Unjustly by Hate-Filled Men – (vs. 5-6)

Behold the Man – Who Suffered in His Body For our sins (1 Peter 2:24)

  • 1 Peter 2:24, “Who his own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed .”

Behold the Man – Whose Hands, Feet and Side Testify of His Crucifixion (John 20:27)

  • Psalm 22:16, “For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.”

“Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.”

2.  What Can We Learn From The Bible Portrait of the Man, Christ Jesus?

            A.  Jesus Christ Embodies God’s Hatred For Sin.

The Man; Christ Jesus took our sin upon Himself (Isaiah 53:3-7)

            B.  Jesus Christ Embodies God’s Love For Sinners.

The Man; Christ Jesus died that we might be saved (John 3:16 and Romans 5:8)

CONCLUSION

Will you behold the man?  Will you receive the man?  Will you place your faith in the man?  Will you allow the man to save you?  Why should you do so, because He is the Messiah, He is God incarnate, He is the one and only mediator?  The Bible clearly states in 2 Timothy 2:5, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
