God the Giver of Wisdom

2 Kings 4:29, "And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the seashore."

Let me first emphasize the fact that God is the giver and grantor of wisdom, notice the words "God gave" and also note James 1:5.  It is also important to note that fearing the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 9:10).

The phrase within today's verse "largeness of heart" speaks of Solomon having a great capacity of mind and the genius to support this large capacity.  Gill in his Exposition of the Entire Bible states; "God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much,... In things natural, moral, divine, and spiritual, and that not slight and superficial, but exceeding deep, and large beyond expression; and this he had not from the acuteness of his genius merely, nor from his industry and diligence; but by the gift of God, as whatsoever solid wisdom and understanding is in any man, it is from the liberal hand of God, the fountain of wisdom."

Spiritually, I have always viewed wisdom as seeing things as God sees.  Looking at things through the lens of God's Holy Word will produce wisdom in one's heart.  Knowing the Holy Scriptures is described as being "able to make thee (Timothy) wise unto salvation..." (2 Timothy 3:15.  Anyone who seeks wisdom needs to ask God for it, and then make sure he is a student of the Word of God.

May we become wise in order to glorify God to the fullest.
