INSTRUCTION IMPACTING YOUR HOME

Read Proverbs 24:1-12

I want to focus upon Proverbs 24:3-6 this morning.

vs. 3 - "Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established.” Wisdom and understanding are the foundation of long-lasting endeavors. Whether it is a literal house or the home in the house, they both are built and established by wisdom and understanding. What have you used to build and establish your home?

vs. 4 - "And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches." Though only knowledge (things like education and learning) are mentioned, there is certainly a connection to the previous verse.  Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, are interrelated. Knowledge is the basis upon which understanding develops and wisdom grows from there. The result of having knowledge, understanding, and wisdom allows for love and joy to develop in the home.  Thus, it is built and established for longevity.

vs. 5 - "A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.” Wisdom creates strength of life. Everything we do is strengthened by wisdom. Knowledge is the beginning of such strength in life. What is implied is continual education (not necessarily formal, but it fits too). The implied result is that knowledge, study, and learning are mental work. The blessings of strength and prospering which come from wisdom require study, reflection, and learning.  I recently shared the words of Proverbs 23:23, which fit perfectly in this setting, "Buy the truth, and sell it not, also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding."  Are you continuing to increase your knowledge of God and His Word?

Finally, verse 6 "For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counselors there is safety." The first thought may be to a king who is considering going to war, he should only do so after receiving wise counsel.  The thought also applies to our homes, we too should seek advice before exerting ourselves in efforts that involve a battle.  Foolish people join battles they cannot win. Wise people avoid the same.  The greater the number and wisdom of counselors, the greater the amount of understanding and wisdom which will be gleaned. The result, safe and sound decisions can be made. You are never too old to seek godly advice from others.

Make sure to build and establish your home on knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.  That is the smart and right thing to do.

Your Friend and HIS,

Pastor Abbott

MEDITATIONS

1.  The home is one of God’s three ordained institutions.  If you are married, how are you building your home?

2.  What have you learned about building a home according to the Scriptures? What are some of the key biblical ingredients?

3.  If wisdom was your only source of strength, how strong would you be?

4.  What efforts have you put forth concerning your home that have produced valuable fruit?  Have you ever asked someone else for advice concerning your family?
