The Effects of God's Grace
Romans 4:4-5, "Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness."
Paul has taken great care (Romans 3:9-10) to prove that both Jew and Gentile are under the curse and condemnation of sin. The Jew was caught in a snare believing that salvation could be achieved through the keeping of the law and performance of good works. Paul chose to use Abraham as an example of faith as he was the patriarchal father of the Jews. An example of one who believed God which brought Abraham into a right standing with God. Romans 4:3, "...Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness."
It is important that we not fall into the snare of believing we are saved by keeping the law or that we remain saved by doing the same. But that we understand that God through His grace has saved us, and His grace should cause us to serve Him with all our heart and soul. God's grace has a huge effect upon the life of the believer. We are counted righteous because of the grace we find in the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross. We enjoy the mercy of God (withholding of deserved punishment) because of the grace of God. God's grace puts a big smile on my face, and gratitude in my heart. Titus 2:11-14 are my favorite verses in the New Testament, "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works." Did you notice what grace teaches? Read those verses again and let grace impact your heart.
We would have no grace without Jesus dying for us. I serve Him because of His grace and love for me. Will you do the same?
