GOD CHOOSES WHOM HE BLESSES
READ ROMANS 9:14-24
This morning our focus is upon Romans 9:14-16. "What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. 15For He saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 16So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy."
Paul evidently had heard the charge from Jewish critics that God had become unrighteous in turning to the gentiles. He answers that foolish charge head-on. Once again, the phrase, “God forbid” could be literally rendered, ‘Let it not be.’ He quotes from Exodus 33:19, “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” God can make whatever decisions He so chooses. Paul thus draws the thought to its logical conclusion: “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.” The idea is that God’s plan is not affected by human purposes (“him that willeth”) nor of human effort (“him that runneth”). Rather, the prerogative is God’s who of His own will shows mercy.
We know that God is a God of mercy, but it is extended to those who respond to Him in faith. I pray you are a recipient of God's mercy and grace!

MEDITATIONS
1. How would you describe God’s dealings with the Jews and the Gentiles?
2. Have you ever purposed to do something, and it has just never happened? Why or why not?
3. Is God willing or not willing that any should perish? Defend your answer from Scripture.
4. God’s mercy and grace is extended to everyone who seeks salvation through Jesus Christ. What does this tell you about God’s choice in saving people?
