LOVING SINCERELY

READ Romans 12:9-16

Today I would like to focus upon Romans 12:9-10, "Let love be without dissimulation.  Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another."

As we read through verses 9-16, it is obvious we are given a series of short commands that speak of our personal actions, attitudes, and thoughts.  Two thoughts are expressed in verse 9, while one is expressed in verse 10.

vs. 9 "Let love be without dissimulation."  The word translated as "dissimulation" has the sense of ‘being without hypocrisy.’ In other words, love on our part to others ought to be genuine and not faked.

"Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good."   Every Christian is to utterly detest that which is sinful and wrong while cleaving to that which is good. The word translated as "cleave" literally means to be glued. Therefore, the twin thoughts complement each other. Flee evil and be glued to good.

vs. 10 "Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another." The phrase ‘kindly affectioned’ speaks about having family affection, such as we would experience within our own families.  The context of this section is concerning our thoughts, actions, and attitudes in the local church.  The word ‘preferring’ speaks of going before and showing the way, and is a leadership term.  What is being stated is that we should give honor to others and not seek a position for ourselves.  This certainly is understood to be an attitude of humility.  The Bible is speaking against self-promotion.

Have a great weekend as you seek to worship and fellowship with God's people in church on the Lord's Day.

MEDITATIONS

1.  What kind of damage can a hypocritical love cause another person? How can you avoid being insincere in this way?

2.  How are love and hate interrelated for the believer?  Are you doing your part to hate evil and show contempt for it?  What are some positive ways you can take a stand against evil?

3.  Why is the charge to “cleave to that which is good” such an important aspect of showing love?

4.  What is the most loving thing another believer has done for you? Did this encourage you to do good toward others?
