LIFE'S GREATEST STRUGGLE

READ Romans 7:14-25

The final section of Romans 7 deals with the struggle all believers have between the sinful nature within and the will to do right through our new nature. The greater thought begun in chapter six and being completed here is obtaining victory over sin in the Christian life. Insight is given into the conflict between the two spiritual natures to better combat sin.

vs. 14 "For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin." This verse, while concluding the preceding thought, leads into the coming section. Therefore, be reminded:

(1) The Law is spiritual. It goes to the heart of the human spirit which often rebels against it. It is not the law that brings death, but rebellious, sinful, human hearts.

(2) Though the Law is spiritual, we are carnal. That is, we have a sinful human nature, in conflict with the righteous principles of God’s law.  This is true of every person.

(3) Moreover, we are “sold under sin.”  The idea is that sin has enslaved us even as a slave is sold to a master. The greater truth is that we ought not to be a slave to sin now that we are in Christ.  The following verses to the end of chapter seven will document the struggle often faced by every believer and the struggle between our old carnal nature and the principle of right defined in God’s law.

For us to live victoriously in life, we must walk in the power of the Holy Spirit and yield ourselves to God and His Word.  Are you living in victory today, or in bondage to your old sin nature?

MEDITATIONS

1.  What does it mean to be “sold under sin?”

2.  How does your sinful nature war against the righteousness of God?

3.  In what areas do you spiritually struggle the most?

4.  List three things you could do to help you obtain victory over your sin.
