Genuine Faith is Living Faith

Read James 2

James 2:17-18, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.”

James is a book that teaches saving faith is best demonstrated by outward expression of faith.  A Christian does not earn his salvation. It isn’t possible, but he should express salvation through obeying the Scriptures and doing that which is right before God.  I have often said, “You don’t work to get saved, but you work because you are saved.”

A person who continually professes salvation, but his life does not demonstrate salvation, has a poor testimony.  James states the importance of outward demonstrations of our faith.  Within the context of this passage he illustrates this by stating, “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?” (verses 15-16).

Is your faith a living faith, or is it dead?  Titus 1:16 states there are those who “…profess that they know God; but in works they deny Him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.”

I want to live in such a way that others can see Christ living in me and through me.  I pray this too will be your desire.

Pastor Abbott

MEDITATIONS

1.  How will someone with living faith respond to a brother or sister in need?  Why are words of encouragement not enough?

2.  How should we view all of our material wealth?  Are you willing to share it with others?

3.  What is the one true sign that a person has real/living faith in God?

4.What evidence in your life shows that you are following Christ?
