WHAT I WAS AND WHAT I AM
Read Ephesians 2:11-18
This morning I would like to focus upon Ephesians 2:12-13. "That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ."
vs. 12 - Prior to the salvation of the Gentiles Paul reminded them of their condition, they were:
without Christ
aliens from the commonwealth of Israel
strangers from the covenants of promise
had no hope
without God
in the world
The thought is that Gentiles, prior to salvation, were not only without Christ and God, but also were outside of the covenant promises made to Israel. The overall thought is that there was a distinct gap between Jews and Gentiles. All who live their lives without Christ are estranged from God having no hope.
vs. 13 - "But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were afar off are made nigh by the blood of Christ." The thought is that in Christ, Gentiles who once were separated from God have been made near through the shed blood of Christ. I'm so glad that one day I realized my sinful condition, and I trusted Christ as my Savior. Since that time, I am living with Christ, I have hope, I have God, and although I am in the world, I am not of the world.

MEDITATIONS
1. What kinds of things keep men away from God today?
2. If you are not saved, what barriers keep you away from God? If you are saved, what keeps you from experiencing a close relationship with God?
3. Do you ever experience feelings of hopelessness? Do you think God can bring you hope in every situation you face? Why or why not?
4. Why do you think God wants your source of strength to come from Him? What happens to you if your strength is your sole source?
5. Why was it necessary for Christ to die to bring you near to God?
6. How do you think God wants you to respond as He draws you near to Himself?
7. What does this verse tell you about God's promise to the Christian?
