THE MIND OF CHRIST AND HUMILITY

READ Philippians 2:5-11

No one has ever demonstrated humility in such perfection as our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.  If we are going to possess Christlike humility, we must have a Christlike mind.  Having the mind of Christ speaks of having the same opinion of ourselves as Christ had of Himself.

If anyone could have refused to be humble it would be Jesus.  Verses six and seven state, “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”  Christ never ceased being God, but He made Himself of no reputation, taking upon Himself man’s likeness and the position of a servant.  Then the ultimate demonstration of His humility is found by what is described in verse eight: “And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Jesus Christ remained humble and obedient to the Father’s will even though it meant that He would be crucified on a cruel cross.

The humility of Christ led to His exaltation by God the Father.  “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

There is no doubt that humility always precedes obedience.  I pray that each of us will have the mind of Christ for God will reward us as He did His Son.  God will reward and exalt any believer who walks as Christ walked – humbly before God and others.

Pastor Abbott

MEDITATIONS

1.  Humility is a Christlike attribute.  What might you do to become more like Christ?

2.  What did Christ empty Himself of when He became both a servant and a man?

3.  What things do you need to empty yourself of in order to become more humble?

4.  In what ways do you think God will reward you for being humble?
