A Heart Fixed Upon the Saviour

Psalm 57:7, "My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise."

David's circumstances are not the greatest, yet his steadfastness is certainly something we all need. This psalm was written during a time in David's life when he was fleeing and hiding from King Saul. In the midst of crying out for God's mercy he states, "...in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast." (Ps. 57:1)  He had fixed his heart upon God with the intention of singing and giving praise to the LORD.

Barne's Notes on the Bible comments: "His (David's) heart was firm and decided. He did not waver in his purpose, or lean now to one side and then to the other; he was not "swayed" or "moved" by the events that had occurred. He felt conscious of standing firm in the midst of all his troubles. He confided in God. He did not doubt his justice, his goodness, his mercy; and, even in his trials, he was ready to praise him, and was "resolved" to praise him. The repetition of the word "fixed" gives emphasis and intensity to the expression, and is designed to show in the strongest manner that his heart, his purpose, his confidence in God, did not waver in the slightest degree."

I believe Satan designs to shake our faith while God designs to strengthen our faith though the trials He allows us to encounter. We choose our response. Are you going to allow circumstances to shake you and defeat you? Or are you going to fix your heart upon the LORD and find refuge under the shadow of His wings? Are you going to murmur, or are you determined to sing to the Lord with praise in your heart?

May we not be shaken by the trials we encounter in life, but may we, like David, fix our heart upon the LORD and sing and give praise.
