The Strength of a Threefold Cord

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, "Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken."

In this chapter, Solomon begins his various views of life.  As Dr. Scofield outlines the book he speaks of chapter four being presented in view of the oppressions and iniquities of life, chapter five in view of riches and poverty, while chapter six is in view of man's inevitable end.  Today's passage evidently presents a view that two are better than one when facing life's perceived oppression and iniquity.  And three are better than two, for a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Satan attempts to isolate us when we are navigating through life's difficulties.  He isolated Eve, he isolated Jesus, he put distance between Job and his wife.  There is nothing better in life than a friend or a spouse who can help us understand the nearness of their own companionship and who also can point us to the never-failing presence of the Lord in our lives.  The Lord, my wife, and I make a threefold cord that is not quickly broken.  We need the support of the local church, our family, and friends to strengthen us for the battles we face in life.

I have known people who chose a path of isolation, thinking they might strengthen their cause in the eyes of a spouse, a friend, or a local congregation.  Don't fall into this trap!!! Satan wants to isolate you in order to sift you!!! You need the strength provided in numbers.  Make sure to surround yourself with godly people, draw nigh to God, He then will draw to you, and enjoy the blessing of a threefold cord.

Have a great day walking in the presence of Christ and other godly people.

Meditations

1. Describe your understanding of a threefold cord? How could this help you?

2. Have you ever experienced a time in your life when you felt all alone? What did this do to weaken you? Who is behind this thought process? What does the Lord want you to realize?
