Three Rules for Living
Psalm 105:1, "O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people."
Today's psalm begins with very clear direction for the person who knows the LORD. As believers we should desire to live life in a manner that brings the most glory to the Lord. All three things listed in this verse should be incorporated into the life of the believer.
First, we should develop the practice of giving thanks unto the LORD. Developing a heart of gratitude in every area of life will serve us well. Today's society seems to be smitten with self. Many view life through eyes of entitlement rather than giving thanks for what they have or receive. We understand that "...every good gift and every perfect gift is from above..." therefore gratitude is something directed first and foremost to the LORD.
Next, we are told to "call upon his name." Two ideas are found in this phrase. The first idea is expressed in Barnes' Notes on the Bible, he states this phrase speaks about how we address God, we must address God "...by his proper title; ascribe to him the attributes which properly belong to him; or, address him in a proper manner." I certainly would agree that we need to have a biblical view of God and give Him the honor due Him. The second idea is conveyed by Gill in his Exposition of the Entire Bible, we "ought to call upon him, or pray to him, in faith and fervency, with frequency and importunity, in the truth and sincerity of their souls; and at all times, especially in times of trouble." We must call upon the LORD, and in so doing have a proper understanding of His greatness and His majesty.
Finally, we are to make known His deeds among the people. Are you experiencing God on a daily basis? Do you interact with the Lord in a manner that allows you to make known His deeds to others? Could you convey God's wisdom, power, and goodness to someone else? Indeed the Gospel is something to be declared. It is to be preached to all nations. Are you sharing the Gospel with others? We simply need to be able to witness accurately to others what God is doing in our lives.
I hope you have a great day walking in the path of our Saviour.
