WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK?
Read Proverbs 23:1-11
The devotion for today focuses on the motivation we should have in working. We work because we must. We work because it is the right thing to do. But is our work done in a manner which is accompanied by the right spirit? Proverbs 23:4 states, "Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom." Twin warnings are at hand. (1) Beware of ambition motivated by greed, "Labour not to be rich...) and, (2) beware of self-conceit, (...cease from thine own wisdom). Those who consider themselves wise are usually not. Moreover, such an attitude advertises the latter. Both avarice (extreme greed for wealth) and pride are rooted in carnality.
The next verse, Proverbs 23:5, speaks of the temporary and fleeting nature of wealth. At best, you keep it until you die, at worst, you lose it all while still alive. "Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. Wealth is a temporary means which allows us all to live, and in the end, wealth comes with wings. It is here for a moment and then flies away. The greater warning is against avarice and greedy ambition.
Steward your money with the purpose of taking care of your family and impacting the Kingdom of God for His glory. You will never want for anything if this is the way you live your life.
