FRIENDSHIP

Read Proverbs 18:13-24

Proverbs 18:24, "A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother."

Two primary thoughts are found in Proverbs 18:24.

First, those who have friends must take the initiative to be friendly. I once spoke to a lady who complained that her church was not friendly.  Then, I learned the rest of the story from her husband.  He said to his wife, "You simply enter the church, find a seat, and expect people to approach you. If you want to experience friendship in the church, you must take the initiative and approach others in a friendly, welcoming manner."  My first thoughts were the truth expressed in Proverbs 18:24, "A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly..."  Her husband was correct, so I challenged her to take the time to approach others with a jovial and welcoming spirit.  It wasn't long until her complaint was erased.  Her church suddenly became a friendly place.  As you know, we reap what we sow.  Sow friendship, and you will reap friendship.  Friendliness develops friendships.

Finally, we are reminded, "...there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother."  There are indeed special friends, people who would do anything for you.  They are always willing and happy to help and encourage.  They stick more closely to you than a brother.  I have been blessed with many great friends over the years.  My wife is my best friend on earth.  I have several friends who are also in the ministry, and I have great friends in our church.   Ultimately, however, the friend who is our greatest friend, is the Lord Jesus.  I'm grateful for His constant watch care over my life, His continual presence and availability, and His great love and mercy.  Yes, there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother, and that Friend is Jesus!

MEDITATIONS

1.  Friendships are not built in isolation.  How can you become more friendly?

2.  Who is your best friend on earth (only humans count – dogs don’t count 😊) How did they become your best friend?

3.  Read John 15:13-15.  What can you learn about your friendship with Christ?
