Advancing the Cause of Christ
Matthew 16:18, "...thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
Today's verse is a wonderful promise concerning Christ and His church. The church is built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ. "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 3:11) God promises that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. No matter what the devil tries to do to stop God's church, God's message and program are going to move forward.
The question then is for us to ask ourselves is, how can we go with God in His plan? How can I be used by God to advance the cause of Christ?
Let me first attempt to define the cause of Christ. I believe the cause of Christ is redeeming man for the purpose of bringing God glory. God created all things to bring Him pleasure. Revelation 4:11, "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure, they are and were created." Man in his lost condition is not able to bring pleasure to God. "So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God." (Romans 8:8)
Therefore, advancing the cause of Christ includes our witnessing faithfully with the goal of seeing others come to Christ for salvation, and to disciple those who come to faith so that they will bring God glory. We must do our part to advance the cause of Christ. Are you a spectator or are you a participator in God's plan to advance His cause through His church?
