Are There Any Sins In Your Life?
2 Chronicles 28:10, "And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your God?"
Today's verse is a partial statement made by a prophet of the Lord whose name was Obed. God had turned Himself against Judah because of the sins of their king, Ahaz. So God sent the king of Syria and the king of Israel against Ahaz and his people. Verse 5 says, "...the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria: and they smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter." The devastation can be seen in the numbers given in this passage. One hundred twenty thousand warriors are killed in one day (vs. 6), and two hundred thousand women, sons, and daughters along with the spoils of war are carried away captive into Samaria (vs. 8).
The outcome seemed to elevate Israel over Judah, however, God through the prophet Obed, wanted to remind the princes of Israel not to be haughty because they too had sin they should deal with. Thus the pointed question, "...are there not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your God?"
If we aren't careful we can fall into a trap. That trap is looking at others, and on the basis of what we see, we think we are better than someone else and because of that we fail to see or recognize our own sin. 1 Corinthians 10:11-12, "Now all these things happened unto them (the children of Israel wandering in the wilderness) for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 12Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."
In humility we must always keep our eyes upon self, lest we allow sin to creep unawares into our own lives. Jesus told us in His sermon on the Mount: "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"
Take an inventory today, because it could be "...are there not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your God?"
