The Importance of Watching and Praying

Matthew 26:41, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

In that moment of greatest need for Christ; Peter, James, and John had difficulty staying awake.  Jesus had asked them to "...tarry ye here, and watch with me" (vs. 38). The word "watch" speaks of the need to be attentive against sudden calamity.  He wanted those men to have His back while He was praying.  But when He arrived again He found them asleep, vs. 40.  He asked Peter, the leader among the three, "...What, could ye not watch with me one hour?"

Today's verse is an application verse.  Jesus took this occasion to teach us our need to be both watchful and prayerful concerning the issue of temptation.  Such is necessary because of the weakness of the flesh.  Spiritually we desire to do what is right always, but the Adamic nature within us grants us the ability to wander away from the Lord.  The apostles were about to face the greatest trial of their lives concerning their loyalty and commitment to Jesus.  The Pulpit Commentary states: "Watchfulness sees temptation coming; prayer gives strength to withstand it."

Our need as Christians is to obey the command of Jesus to His disciples:  "Watch and pray..."  Be alert of any and all lurking temptations which can bring calamity, and find strength through prayer to stand in the day of temptation.

Have a great day serving Jesus!
