THE CHRISTIAN AND WORK
Read Colossians 3:22-4:1
This passage deals with the subject of work, and the relationships that are encountered in the workplace. Here we see the employee and the employer. Here we learn about the worker and the supervisor.
The Christian is to approach work from a spiritual perspective, just as he would every other aspect of life. Dr. Bob Jones, Sr. used to say, “All ground is holy ground, every bush a burning bush.” There is no difference between the secular and the sacred in the life of a believer.
Note that the discussion concerns slaves and their masters, but the instructions are applicable to every generation of workmen, no matter their status.
1. Notice the employee – vss. 22-25.
“Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: 23And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. 25But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.”
A Christian is to always be a good worker, working in reverence to God.
A Christian is to work from the soul, “as to the Lord, and not unto men.”
A Christian is to work knowing God will reward diligent and honest labor.
A Christian is warned that God will punish wrong behavior in the workplace.
2. Notice the employer – vs. 4:1
“Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.”
The employer is to treat workers justly without respect of persons. There are times in the workplace that it seems people can be treated differently. The employer should make decisions in light of the fact that he has a Judge in heaven who is his Master.

MEDITATIONS
1. Objectively and honestly, evaluate your work: When you work, do you work as though you were serving the Lord, as diligently as you can? Or do you work as little as you can, getting by with as little work as possible?
2. How does your boss feel about your work? Does he believe you are a hard worker or are you viewed as someone who only does enough to get by.
3. How can you improve your testimony at work?
4. What is the employer responsible for in the lives of his employees?
