LEARNING FROM THE EXAMPLE OF TIMOTHY

READ Philippians 2:19-24

This morning our passage speaks of a special relationship between the Apostle Paul and a Christian named Timothy.  Timothy’s life had been lived in such a way that Paul, without reservation, entrusted him with important ministry responsibilities.  He had also endeared himself to the Apostle.  Philippians 2:22 states, “But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.”  Indeed, they had a special bond in the Lord.

Let’s take a few moments this morning to learn from the example of Timothy.  Notice four keys:

  1. Timothy was willing to serve at the direction of Paul – vs. 19. Timothy didn’t have a problem ranking himself under the authority of Paul. This made Timothy valuable, as he was willing and able to follow instructions.

  2. Timothy was a man who cared for others – vs. 20. The adverb “naturally” as it is linked to the verb “care” Timothy speaks of how Timothy cared for others. “Naturally” means to be genuine, faithful, and sincere. He fully cared for others.

  3. Timothy denied self – vs. 21. “For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.” If you are going to accomplish great things in the service of God, then you must deny self. Jesus said to His disciples, “…If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

  4. Finally, Timothy proved himself as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Read verses 22-24.
